T2 Cream is the first-ever topical thyroid hormone cream designed to provide superior flexibility, absorption, and utilization of T2 for thyroid patients. The topical route of administration provides unique benefits to the breakdown of T2 thyroid hormone by bypassing first-pass metabolism in the liver. This route also allows for uncompromised flexibility when it is taken and may enhance thyroid function of tissues where it is applied topically*.
Description
The First-Ever Thyroid Hormone Cream
T2 Thyroid hormone is well known for its benefits on metabolism, heat and energy production, and liver health so it’s no surprise that thyroid patients love taking it.
While oral T2 capsules definitely work, thyroid hormone cream has been relegated to the sidelines for far too long.
That changes now with the introduction of T2 Cream.
T2 Cream provides your body with the same T2 that it would produce naturally but allows you to take advantage of the benefits of topical administration.
This means…
- Better absorption*
- Decreased breakdown of thyroid hormone in the liver after application*
- Activation of tissues where the hormone is placed topically & more benefits to skin health*
- The ability to titrate doses and use lower doses as needed*
- More flexibility in how and when you take it*
- Decreased interference of thyroid hormone with supplements, medications, and food*
- And fewer side effects*
Ingredients
T2 Cream features the most bioavailable form of T2 thyroid hormone as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine.
As a powerful thyroid hormone, it’s no surprise that studies show that taking T2 can:
- Regulate metabolism and basal metabolic rate*
- Activate detoxification enzymes in the liver*
- Activate brown adipose tissue*
- Increase cellular ATP production*
- Regulate cholesterol metabolism*
- Maintain skeletal muscle*
- Protect kidney function*
- Assist in the regulation of blood sugar*
- Help determine muscle tone*
- Balance T4 and T3 levels*
From a practical standpoint, we have the advantage of providing the most used T2 supplement on the market so we have an extensive database of how T2 has helped thyroid patients.
Based on this information, here’s what most thyroid patients experience while taking it:
- More sustained energy throughout the day
- Better control of thyroid symptoms
- Easier weight management and fat loss
- Higher body temperature
- Hair growth
- A sense of better hormonal balance and a sense of greater well-being
Inactive and additional ingredients are added to stabilize the T2 found in this formula, to ensure its stability, and to enhance topical absorption through the skin.
The names of these ingredients may sound intense, but they all score Green or Low Hazard on the EWG Skin Deep Index.
You can see a list of the ingredients below with their corresponding EWG score. On this scoring system, a low score is considered best:
- Caprylic/capric triglycerides (MCT oil from coconut) – EWG verified with a score of 1
- Sodium polyacrylate – EWG verified with a score of 1-2
- Hydrogenated polydecene – EWG score of 2
- Trideceth-6 – EWG verified with a score of 1
- Leuconostoc/Radish root ferment filtrate (natural preservative) – EWG verified with a score of 1
- HDI/Trimethylol hexyllactone crosspolymer – EWG verified with a score of 1
- Silica – EWG score of 1-3
Based on its ingredient profile, T2 cream is considered:
- Thyroxine-free
- Fragrance-free
- Paraben-free
- Phthalate-free
- Sulfate-free
- Non-GMO
- And contains only natural preservatives
How to Take it
Step #1. Apply 2 pumps (50 mcg of T2) to the forearm, abdomen, wrist, behind the knee/elbow, arm, leg, or torso each day (rotate areas of application for best results).
Step #2. Allow 6 weeks of daily use before tissue saturation and a steady state is reached in the body. The full benefits will be reached after several months of daily use.
Step #3. Enjoy the benefits of better thyroid function as you more closely mimic the thyroid hormone production of the healthy thyroid gland!
Why Dr. Childs Recommends It
“Taking hormones topically (through the skin) has always been the preferred route of administration for all hormones including testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.
It wasn’t until T2 cream that this became an option for thyroid patients. But now, with its creation, thyroid patients can take advantage of better T2 absorption, the bypassing of first-pass metabolism in the liver, smaller effective doses (and therefore fewer side effects), and other benefits only provided by creams and gels.
Hopefully, its presence ushers in the creation of more topical thyroid hormones in the future!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Both Essential T2 and T2 Cream contain the same active ingredient but differ in how they are taken and the dose of T2 provided per serving.
Essential T2 provides bio-identical T2 thyroid hormone as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine in capsule form. Each capsule contains 100 mcg of T2.
T2 Cream provides bio-identical T2 thyroid hormone as 3,5 diiodo-l-thyronine in cream form. Each pump contains 25 mcg of T2 and each serving provides 50 mcg of T2 (2 pumps).
Why would I create two different supplement versions of the same hormone?
For many reasons!
The first has to do with the fact that topical hormone administration is almost always preferred over oral (capsule/tablet) administration.
This is because the topical route provides unique benefits (which you can read more about below) that you simply can’t get with the oral route.
In addition, there are plenty of people who have used Essential T2 in capsule form who can’t tolerate the static dose provided there.
T2 Cream solves this problem by allowing for much smaller dosing increments (25 mcg per pump versus 100 mcg per capsule).
The cream form also provides superior flexibility in how and when it is taken.
Because you don’t have to worry about intestinal interference with food, supplements, or medications, T2 cream can be taken at any time of the day, with food or without, and with any type of medication.
One of the biggest problems with oral thyroid hormone is that you have to be careful when you take it, but this doesn’t apply to T2 Cream for the reasons listed above.
How do you know if you should take T2 Cream or Essential T2?
That’s going to depend primarily on how tolerant you are to T2 in general, how well topical hormones are absorbed by you personally, and how sensitive you are to thyroid hormones and medications/supplements in general.
If you tend to need higher doses then Essential T2 in capsule form is probably ideal.
If, however, you have tried Essential T2 and found it to be too powerful for you, then T2 cream is the preferred option.
Each pump of T2 Cream provides 25 mcg of T2 thyroid hormone.
The recommended serving size is 2 pumps which provides a total of 50 mcg of T2.
Given the higher rate of absorption of T2 when taken topically, this amount roughly equates to the 100 mcg found in one Essential T2 capsule.
T2 Cream can be applied to pretty much any surface of your skin but I recommend the following locations:
- Forearm
- Abdomen (belly fat)
- Wrist
- Behind the knee or elbow
- Arm
- Leg
- Torso
Here are a few additional considerations when thinking about where to apply it:
#1. The skin that is thinnest will result in the most rapid absorption (think of areas of your body like your forearms which also have a rich blood supply from your veins which are very close to the surface of your skin).
#2. It takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes for the T2 thyroid hormone in T2 Cream to absorb into your skin.
This means that there is a brief time that you may transfer some of that hormone to somebody else if they touch the area of your body where it was applied.
This isn’t a huge consideration nor is it harmful if you transfer a small amount, but, ideally, you wouldn’t want to transfer it to anyone else because that means less is making it into your body!
#3. Depending on where you apply it, you may get additional benefits.
Some early research into topical thyroid hormone application suggests that it may provide benefits to hair growth and fat loss.
This research is still in its early stages but there’s some evidence to suggest that topical application of thyroid hormone may assist in regrowing hair lost from the thyroid and in the burning of fat where it is applied.
#4. In general, it’s ideal to rotate the various locations on your body where the hormone is applied.
This rotation helps prevent against tissue saturation and ensures that the T2 has the ability to completely absorb into your body and tissues.
Topical thyroid hormone provides unique benefits that you simply can’t get with the oral route.
Some of these benefits include:
#1. The bypassing of first-pass metabolism in the liver.
All hormones, medications, and supplements that are taken by mouth pass immediately through the liver via the portal vein after they are absorbed in the intestinal tract.
Because the primary job of the liver is to break things down for elimination, the passing of whatever you take by mouth through the liver results in the significant breakdown of that compound.
When you take a hormone or medication topically, that hormone goes immediately into the venous bloodstream where it enters the heart first and gets pumped to the tissues that need it most BEFORE making its way to the liver.
The difference in passing through the liver later rather than earlier means that topical hormones and medications are afforded higher bioavailability for smaller doses.
This is a huge benefit for hormones, especially thyroid hormone, because a smaller, yet more effective dose, means less stimulation of tissues like the heart and fewer side effects relating to its stimulation.
#2. Bypassing gut-related absorption issues in the gastrointestinal tract.
All thyroid hormones, including those found in medications, often suffer from decreased absorption due to gastrointestinal-related issues.
Problems like small intestinal overgrowth, decreased stomach acid, and changes to gut flora concentration, all of which are common among thyroid patients, can interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones.
Taking thyroid hormone topically completely bypasses the intestinal tract which means your gut has no ability to negatively impact the absorption of said hormone.
#3. Flexibility in how and when you take it.
Another common concern for thyroid patients taking oral thyroid hormone is the impact food has on the absorption of thyroid medication.
This doesn’t just apply to foods either as the same problem can occur with supplements, medications, and even juices or milk.
This is why there are all sorts of rules about how and when you should take thyroid hormone.
But this is only a concern if your thyroid hormone is taken orally, it’s not a concern if you take your thyroid medication topically.
Taking advantage of the topical route means you can apply thyroid hormone at any time of the day regardless of what other medications and supplements you are taking and whatever food schedule you must adhere to.
Complete control of your thyroid hormone means better compliance and better results.
#4. Topical benefits to tissues where it is applied.
This is an emerging and largely theoretical benefit but still an important one to consider.
Because just about every cell in your body has a thyroid receptor, every single tissue must come into contact with thyroid hormone.
This is easier said than done, though, especially for tissues that are very far away from the heart (think your hair follicles and skin).
These distant tissues are often the last to get thyroid hormone because all of the other tissues take what they need before it ever makes its way to these tissues.
As a result, symptoms like hair loss, depression, cold intolerance, and the inability to burn fat cells often remain even as other thyroid symptoms improve with thyroid hormones.
Taking thyroid hormone topically may provide a solution to this problem because the topical application of hormone means that these distant tissues receive thyroid hormone FIRST rather than last.
Some researchers have theorized that the topical application of thyroid hormone may have benefits on conditions like cold intolerance, hair loss, and even fat loss.
By applying topical T2 to areas of fat (think your stomach), or areas of hair loss (anywhere on your body), you may be able to target and reduce these symptoms.
Before you get too excited, please be aware that this is largely a theoretical benefit as there hasn’t been a topical thyroid hormone to test these theories on until now.
However, there is some physiologic data to suggest that this may be a real benefit.
Only time will tell, though, so if you are up for experimentation, feel free to apply T2 Cream to various parts of your body and monitor your results.
Even though there are several benefits to taking T2 topically doesn’t mean that oral T2 doesn’t work or isn’t effective, by the way.
You will likely find that one route of administration works best for you and in order to do that, you may need to experiment.
As a patient with hypothyroidism from any cause including conditions like Hashimoto’s, thyroid removal, post thyroidectomy, etc., there’s a good chance that you will benefit from taking T2 Cream.
Here’s why:
T2 thyroid hormone is created in a healthy state through the breakdown and conversion of thyroid hormones like T3 and T4.
By definition, if you have low thyroid function then your body is unable to produce an adequate amount of T4 and T3 thyroid hormone.
If your body can’t produce enough of these hormones then there’s a very good chance that you will also be low on the downstream breakdown products of their metabolism including T2 thyroid hormone.
But what about those taking levothyroxine? Do they get enough T2?
And the answer is most likely not.
We know this because we already know that thyroid patients taking T4 have a difficult time creating T3 from that T4.
So why would we assume that thyroid patients would be able to create T2 from T3 if they can’t create T3 from T4?
We wouldn’t which is why so many thyroid patients benefit from taking T2.
Based on this information, it’s safe to assume that the majority of thyroid patients who are hypothyroid need T2 and benefit from taking it.
In a perfect world, we would be able to test T2 status much like we do for T3 and T4 but there are no commercially available tests available for T2 like there are for these other hormones.
As a result, there’s some degree of educated guesswork that is involved in using T2, at least for now.
But based on our experience of thousands of thyroid patients who have used our T2 supplement over the last year and the fact that we dose our T2 supplements at safe levels, there’s no harm in testing it out.
For best results, apply 50 mcg worth of T2 Cream (2 pumps) to your skin each day.
T2 Cream features a synthetic source of T2.
Thyroid patients sometimes automatically assume that synthetic hormones are bad just because they are synthetic but this isn’t the case.
When determining whether or not a hormone is “good” for the body, a more important metric to look at is whether or not that hormone is bio-identical.
You can’t assume that naturally sourced hormones are good just like you can’t assume that synthetically sourced hormones are bad.
Here are some examples which highlight this point:
Premarin is a naturally sourced estrogen-like compound but contains non-bioidentical estrogens which may lead to harm in humans.
Natural Desiccated Thyroid (like Armour thyroid) is both a naturally sourced thyroid medication and contains bio-identical hormones but because it contains animal products it has the potential to flare up the immune system.
Levothyroxine is a synthetically sourced hormone but contains bio-identical T4 thyroid hormone as thyroxine.
Unfortunately, levothyroxine doesn’t work for everyone but that’s primarily because it contains only T4 and not T3 or T2 (unlike Armour Thyroid).
The T2 found in T2 Cream is synthetically sourced but contains bio-identical T2 thyroid hormone.
When determining whether or not you should take a hormone always look at whether or not that hormone is bio-identical to the hormone that your own body would produce naturally.
In the case of this cream, it is.
T2 Cream can be used indefinitely.
There’s no reason to stop taking it or take breaks while using it.
In short, yes!
But if you want the longer answer, here’s how we know:
#1. There’s no reason to automatically assume that T2 is harmful because we know that it’s created naturally by the body.
Like other thyroid hormones, the body naturally creates T2 as it needs it and when you are in the hypothyroid state, it is unable to produce what it needs.
Supplementing with extra T2 simply provides your body with the difference between what it would create when it is healthy versus what it can’t create in the hypothyroid state.
#2. Thyroid patients have been using T2 for over 70 years because it’s naturally found (in small amounts) in NDT thyroid medications like Armour Thyroid and NP Thyroid.
These NDT thyroid medications contain a small amount of T2 and have been used by thousands and thousands of thyroid patients over the years.
If there were truly a problem with taking T2, we would have seen issues arise over the last 70 years from the use of these medications.
What we see is the exact opposite, though:
A clear preference for the use of thyroid medications that contain multiple thyroid hormones, like Armour Thyroid, over thyroid medications that contain only a single thyroid hormone, like levothyroxine.
It’s even been speculated by many thyroid practitioners that the reason NDT thyroid medications are preferred is because of their additional thyroid hormones in the form of T3 and T2.
#3. Over-the-counter T2 supplements have been available for a long time.
We also have data from bodybuilders who have used various thyroid hormones, including T2, to help with weight loss.
If we were going to see any harm with the use of T2 it would come from someone abusing it for weight loss which is the case with bodybuilders who use it for cutting purposes.
But even when used for this situation, we don’t see negative side effects to any meaningful degree.
We can, therefore, assume that side effects would be even less pronounced in people who actually need it (e.g. hypothyroid patients) and this is exactly what we see.
#4. Studies show that doses of T2 less than 300 mcg per day do not impact thyroid lab tests and do not cause harmful side effects.
We also have studies that back up the safety of doses less than 300 mcg per day.
These studies have been used to help guide our recommended doses for both Essential T2 and T2 Cream.
By recommending oral doses of around 100 mcg per day and topical doses of around 50 mcg per day (assuming 2x absorption and utilization for topical T2 over oral T2), you will be far away from the range of T2 doses that can conceivably cause problems.
#5. We have an extensive database of thyroid patients who have used T2 successfully and who have not experienced any harmful side effects.
This one is purely anecdotal but we are one of the largest manufacturers of T2 supplements and we pay attention to how people respond to our products.
Our tracking indicates that the number of people who respond negatively to T2 is in line with our other botanical-based supplements which suggests there’s nothing especially harmful about T2 as a supplement or ingredient.
It’s more just the fact that not everyone responds to every supplement equally well and this applies to all ingredients including things like ashwagandha or rhodiola.
Yep! T2 Cream was designed to be used in conjunction with all other thyroid medications and all other thyroid hormones.
Because it’s a cream, it can also be taken at the same time as your thyroid medication.
In regards to other prescription medications, there are no known interactions with T2 and these medications but if you have any concerns we always recommend that you discuss them with your doctor.
Nope! At the doses we recommend, T2 Cream will not impact your thyroid lab tests.
Based on our experience in providing T2 to over 10,000 thyroid patients, here’s what we’ve seen:
Roughly 70-75% of thyroid patients see some sort of positive benefit (more information below).
About 10-15% experience no discernable benefit.
And about 10-15% experience some minor negative symptoms.
As far as positive symptoms go, thyroid patients have reported the following:
- Improved body temperature
- Easier weight loss
- More energy
- Feeling more balanced
- More hair growth
- And better thyroid symptom control overall
As far as negative symptoms go, some thyroid patients have reported the following:
- Jittery sensation
- Dizziness
- Nervous energy
- Increased heart rate
- Palpitations
- Insomnia
- And one person reported hair loss
These side effects tend to be quite rare and are typically dose-dependent, meaning they can be managed simply by reducing how much you are taking.
If these symptoms do arise, they will fade once T2 is discontinued.
While both compounds contain thyroid hormones, they contain different thyroid hormones and are used for different purposes.
T2 Cream contains T2 thyroid hormone and levothyroxine contains T4 thyroid hormone.
T4 is used by the body as a prohormone for the creation of T3.
T2 is used by the body to support the cellular function of T3.
Unfortunately, right now there are no commercially available T2 tests.
The ability to test for T2 exists but right now it’s primarily used for research purposes and is not available for patients or from standard lab companies.
Even though you can’t directly test your T2 level, there are ways that you can indirectly assess your T2 status.
Here are a few:
#1. You can estimate your T2 by looking at your T3 level.
This works as a proxy measurement because the body creates T2 from the conversion of T3 into T2.
If your body doesn’t have enough T3 then you can make the assumption that it will not be able to create enough T2.
#2. You can look at proxy measurements including metabolism, resting heart rate, and basal body temperature.
We know from physiologic data that T2 helps to control and regulate metabolism, resting heart rate, cholesterol, and basal body temperature.
If you look at these metrics and find that they are lacking or lower than they should be, you can make the assumption that your T2 status is not optimized.
If it were, then these metrics would be more normal.
#3. You can look at your thyroid symptoms.
If you are still experiencing low thyroid symptoms, even while taking thyroid medication, then it’s likely that your thyroid hormones are not optimized.
This method of thyroid hormone evaluation is often used by those taking levothyroxine to determine whether or not they would benefit from taking additional T3.
You can also apply the same logic to whether or not you would benefit from taking T2.
While not perfect, these proxy measurements provide fairly accurate data as to your T2 status and can used to both determine if you need T2 and to determine if T2 is beneficial for your body.
Potentially, but please keep this in mind:
Essential T2 is not considered a weight loss supplement.
It is, first and foremost, a thyroid support supplement that was designed to provide thyroid patients with a more balanced thyroid hormone profile.
Having said that, studies that evaluate the effect of T2 thyroid hormone on the metabolism have been positive.
Based on research, it’s clear that T2 thyroid hormone does have some impact on both metabolism and the T3 nuclear receptor (which helps regulate metabolism).
One animal study showed that using 300 mcg/day of T2 caused a significant increase in resting metabolic rate (metabolism) with a corresponding decrease in body weight over several weeks.
These benefits were seen without altering free T3, free T4, and TSH levels.
When used correctly, and in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, it’s possible that weight loss may be a positive secondary side effect of its use.
If you are a thyroid patient struggling to lose weight, focus your efforts on eating a whole-food diet, regular exercise, stress reduction, sleep optimization, and intermittent fasting.
When these natural lifestyle changes are combined with thyroid support supplements and thyroid medication, weight loss will occur easily and naturally.
It will be hard to pinpoint success on any one treatment and that’s normal.
It’s the combination of treatments that will ultimately help you reach a normal body weight.
Yes!
T2 Cream is especially beneficial to those without a thyroid because they rely 100% on thyroid medication for their thyroid hormones.
And we know from studies that patients without a thyroid who only take T4 medications like levothyroxine have lower T3 levels compared to those with a thyroid gland.
This indicates that patients without a thyroid are unable to create enough T3 and T2 from T4 alone.
As a result, additional supplementation with T2 may be warranted to recreate the healthy thyroid hormone profile produced by a functioning thyroid gland.
The most obvious way will be to assess your symptoms or how you are feeling!
T2 Cream should not impact your thyroid lab tests so the best way to assess if it’s working is by looking at your symptoms.
Most people have an intuitive sense of how they are feeling and can tell if thyroid support supplements are working based on this metric alone.
If you are having a harder time evaluating this metric then I recommend keeping a journal or record of your daily energy level, how you are sleeping, the quality of your sleep, your body temperature, your resting heart rate, your body fat percentage, your body weight, and a general sense of your mood.
These are all indirect measures of thyroid function and can help you determine how T2 cream is helping you.
Unfortunately, thyroid function is slow to respond when compared to other hormone systems in the body.
It takes a minimum of 6 weeks of daily use of any thyroid hormone or thyroid support supplement before your body reaches a steady state and before you start to feel its beneficial effects.
And this is just the beginning because it will take several months for the full benefit and full effects to be realized.
This timeline is standard for all thyroid hormones which is why doctors will not recheck thyroid lab tests sooner than 8 weeks after making changes to your thyroid medication dose.
Yes!
Some people will suggest that T2 supplements are not necessary if you are already taking NDT medications like Armour Thyroid or NP Thyroid but this isn’t entirely true.
While it is true that these medications likely contain some small amount of T2, the manufacturers of these medications never test their products for T2 nor do they standardize their dose.
As a result, the amount of T2 you obtain from these medications is highly variable and estimated to be far below what the body actually needs.
On top of this, we have had many thyroid patients benefit from adding T2 on top of their NDT formulations.
Each bottle contains 60 servings of 50 mcg of T2.
If using the recommended dose of 50 mcg per day, the container will last approximately 60 days.
T2 Cream is very well tolerated but should you experience a bad reaction, please discontinue use of the product as soon as possible and reach out to us at hello@restartmed.com.

T2 Cream | Topical Bio-Identical T2 Thyroid Hormone (60 Servings)
I'm on my second month of using T2 cream and have signed up to receive it monthly. This T2 cream definitely helps me feel more normal. If you have thyroid issues, this is worth a try. The fact that it is a cream is an added plus. Thank you Dr. Childs for creating a new product that helps.
Since I started using T2 cream I notice that I have more energy, significant reduction of hair loss and my eyebrows are slowly growing back!
been using it for 2-3 months now and my energy is definitely up! i’m not sure of the other benefits for me yet, but even if it’s just the energy increase alone, it’s totally worth it!
