Protein Powder for Hypothyroidism & Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Functional Fuel Complete is the ideal protein powder for those who have thyroid-related issues including hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.

Why?

Because it contains a balanced blend of amino acids and protein from sources which do not include soy, dairy or gluten.

It’s not uncommon for protein powders to contain protein sourced from a dairy which can cause intestinal and immune issues in those who have thyroid-related problems.

This can be avoided with a high-quality, plant-based protein powder.

Beyond the typical protein powder, Functional Fuel also contains 22 vitamins and minerals as well as other additions which help your body absorb and utilize protein including Artinia and Aminogen.

This balanced combination has been used in hundreds of thyroid patients and has worked well to help replete vital nutrients, improve energy and help with weight loss.

Protein Powder is Important for Your Thyroid & Metabolism

If you are a thyroid patient then you know the reality of feeling fatigued, having low energy and gaining weight.

These symptoms are all too common among thyroid patients.

But what actually causes them?

While thyroid hormone certainly plays an important role, the role of diet and nutrient status should not be overlooked.

An unbalanced (or poor) diet can exacerbate your thyroid condition and lead to nutrient deficiencies.

That’s where functional food and protein powder step in:

Functional food is used to describe food which has a purpose beyond its function as a food.

It helps improve the function of your body and in this case, functional fuel is helping to provide your body with nutrients and helping to improve your thyroid.

It does this through its blend of protein and its blend of nutrients and trace minerals.

When you use Functional Fuel you can be sure that you are getting at least 1 amazing meal per day which is replete with nutrients, vitamins, protein and other ingredients that your body and your thyroid need to function day-to-day.

But high-quality protein powder does more than just provide your body with nutrients.

Protein, as a macronutrient, also helps your body to manage your appetite and build your muscle mass.

That means using protein powder can potentially help curb your cravings for unhealthy foods while providing your body with essential building blocks to create more muscle mass.

It’s a win-win.

But, like other food groups, the quality and the source of the protein matters!

Whey vs Plant-Based Protein Powder

Most commercial protein powders are created used whey protein or whey isolate.

These protein powders use dairy as their source, the whey component.

This may not be a problem for most people, but thyroid patients shouldn’t be considered “most patients”.

And why is that?

It’s because your thyroid helps to regulate your immune system, produce stomach acid and controls the movement of your intestinal tract.

That means, if you have thyroid disease, you are more susceptible to gastrointestinal issues such as IBS, SIBO, acid reflux and poor absorption.

It also means that you need to take care of the quality and type of food that you ingest! And this includes protein powders.

Plant-based protein powders tend to be absorbed more easily, and are well tolerated when compared to dairy-based protein powders.

This is especially true for those with thyroid-related conditions.

The moral of the story?

As a thyroid patient, you need to find a high-quality plant-based protein powder that will NOT exacerbate existing intestinal issues and one that will be easily absorbed and provide your body with the nutrients that you need to function at 100%.

Functional Fuel fits the bill on all levels.

How Much is Too Much Protein

While protein is essential for optimal performance, you also want to ensure that you are not getting too much.

The ideal amount of protein is a sufficient amount to regulate your appetite (help reduce your cravings) while providing your body enough to maintain your muscle mass and help promote new muscle growth.

Too much protein can actually make some hormone imbalances worse such as leptin resistance and insulin resistance.

Because of this, Functional Fuel contains the ideal amount of protein at 15 grams per serving (or about 7.5grams per half serving).

This amount is designed to help keep you full and maintain muscle mass without causing other metabolic problems.

Plant protein is also readily absorbed and utilized quickly when compared to other types of proteins.

We do NOT recommend that you take this protein powder at the same time as your medication but it can be safely taken a few hours either before or after.

3.) How does this compare to your other protein powders (DETOX and ENERGIZE)?

Each of my protein powders contains the same basic ingredients (including the same plant-based powder and basic vitamins/nutrients) but differ in their additional ingredients which help differentiate how they are to be used.

  • Functional Fuel COMPLETE – The complete protein powder is an everyday use protein powder which contains high-quality plant-based protein powder.
  • Functional Fuel ENERGIZE – ENERGIZE contains all of the same ingredients in Functional Fuel COMPLETE but also contains additional ingredients such as natural sources of caffeine (coffee fruit extract), bovine IgG, arabinogalactan, and glucoraphanin (ideal as a pre-workout protein powder, a replacement for coffee/energy drinks, or as a weight loss protein powder).
  • Functional Fuel DETOX – DETOX contains all of the ingredients, vitamins, and nutrients that COMPLETE has but also contains several important nutrients which help promote detoxification pathways including MSM, turmeric, ginger, quercetin, betaine, watercress, and NAC.

An easy way to determine which supplement to start with is as follows:

  • Use Complete if: you want an everyday healthy protein powder, you want a clean protein powder which is plant-based and does not contain dairy, gluten, or soy, you are interested in weight loss.
  • Use ENERGIZE if: weight loss if your primary goal, you want a healthy and clean pre-workout protein powder, you need a coffee replacement, you want a clean and sustained source of energy, you have gut-related issues.
  • Use DETOX if: you have inflammation or autoimmune disease, you suffer from leaky gut or other intestinal issues, want to clean our your system or use detox to jump start your health or weight loss routine, know that you need to get rid of chemicals/toxins or other endocrine disruptors, or just want a healthy clean protein powder.

4.) Is this protein powder Vegan?

And in addition to being vegan, it is also free of wheat, gluten, soy protein, dairy products, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners and artificial preservatives.

We aim to make our products as CLEAN as possible so that you can obtain all of the benefits without any negative consequences.

5.) What sweetner is used in this protein powder?

Functional Fuel Complete is sweetened with dried cane syrup and stevia leaf extract (a small amount of both). The Dutch Chocolate version is sweetened with Monk Fruit.

6.) How should I use this protein powder?

We recommend that you use 1-2 scoops every day.

Functional fuel can be used short term or long-term without any issue.

7.) Will this protein powder help me lose weight?

While this protein powder is not specifically designed to help with weight loss it may be a potential side effect seen in many thyroid patients.

If you are primarily interested in weight loss then you should look at my other protein powders which contain additional ingredients to help with weight management (Functional Fuel DETOX and Functional Fuel ENERGIZE).

The best protein powder I’ve had yet

The taste is great but what I love most is that this is the only powder I’ve tried that I don’t react to and there’s zero bloating. It’s magic. I’m ordering again for sure!!!! I finally found my powder.

Protein Powder

I purchased both, chocolate and vanilla, protein Powder. I love vanilla flavor powder. Very pleasant taste and easy to drink. My 18 years old son also likes drinking Vanilla Powder after workout. Regarding Chocolate Powder, both of us are not big fans of this flavor. Chocolate Powder seems to be way too sweet. It still has a pleasant taste, but vanilla is our favorite flavor. It is an expensive supplement, but high quality product.

Gift giving

I purchased the dutch chocolate functional fuel complete for myself and it was wonderful. Can't believe how much energy I've had and I've lost 5 pounds within a couple of weeks. My second order was the vanilla for a friend who got me started on the functional fuel complete. It was her birthday and a wonderful way to say thank you. I'll have to get some for my daughter to try out now. Thanks Dr. Westin for helping me with my thyroid issues.
