Description

The Benefits of B Vitamins on Thyroid Function

B Vitamins are an essential group of nutrients that your body and thyroid need to function.

Even minor deficiencies can cause symptoms like…

  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue (decreased energy)
  • Intolerance to certain foods that are high in fat or protein
  • Hair loss
  • Brain fog
  • Depression
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Constipation
  • Heart palpitations
  • Anemia
  • And much more

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? If so, you aren’t alone.

Thyroid patients, owing to the impact that thyroid dysfunction has on the gut, are particularly susceptible to deficiencies in all of the B vitamins.

And deficiencies in any of them can complicate thyroid treatment making it harder for you to know what’s working and what isn’t.

For this reason, replacing these B vitamins is an absolute no-brainer for all thyroid patients, regardless of thyroid condition.

In a perfect world, you’d be able to rely on food to get you what you need, but it’s estimated that up to 97% of people lack the dietary intake they need for optimal health.*

The good news is that you can easily restore these essential B vitamins with the right supplement.

Which is exactly why I created Thyroid B Complex.

Thyroid B Complex contains supratherapeutic doses of all essential B vitamins in their most pre-activated and usable forms to provide thyroid patients with the support they desperately need.

Taking 1 capsule per day provides your body, thyroid, and cells with the B vitamins to help:

  • Boost metabolism*
  • Support the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats*
  • Improve energy levels*
  • Improve mood and cognition*
  • Support better thyroid function*
  • Support optimal thyroid lab tests*
  • And keep your heart healthy*

The difference between a stock standard B complex and one designed specifically for thyroid patients is all about the ingredients including dosages and forms used.

Thyroid B Complex was formulated from the ground up to include the best forms of all available B vitamins to ensure that they can be absorbed, metabolized, and used by the body.

Ingredients 417 mg per serving

Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is critical for thyroid patients because it helps break down carbohydrates for energy, supports detoxification of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and is needed to recycle vitamin K and folate.

Because the body doesn’t store vitamin B1, daily intake is required to maintain optimal levels.

Research shows that supplementing with vitamin B1…

  • Support carbohydrate metabolism*
  • Improve energy and decrease fatigue in patients with Hashimoto’s*
  • Support nerve health*
  • Support eye health*

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, helps the body break down and burn fat as an energy source, acts as an antioxidant to protect cells from oxidative stress, reduces homocysteine, and supports many aspects of mental and physical health.

Along with vitamin B12 and folate, changes in vitamin B2 levels can disrupt thyroid function and alter T4 levels.*

Thyroxine (T4 thyroid hormone) regulates the conversion of riboflavin to riboflavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) which means hypothyroid patients are at risk for decreased vitamin B2 function.

Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, is needed by the body to utilize neurotransmitters effectively, lengthen telomeres to allow for healthy aging, repair DNA, and keep your skin and gut healthy.

When niacin is low, you may experience symptoms such as accelerated aging, inflammation in the skin, mood changes such as depression, and gut problems such as diarrhea.

Research shows that optimal niacin levels are needed to maintain a healthy thyroid gland and euthyroid (normal) state.

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is needed by the body to produce energy, convert carbohydrates into ATP, and create stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, and norepinephrine.

Suboptimal deficiencies in vitamin B5 may result in symptoms such as depression, numbers or tingling in the hands and feet, difficulty sleeping, and gut problems, which may make managing thyroid disease more difficult.

For this reason, optimizing vitamin B5 is important for all thyroid patients.

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, acts as a co-enzyme for more than 100 different enzymatic reactions which are essential for the production of neurotransmitters, hemoglobin, and the metabolism of homocysteine.

Research has shown that a deficiency in vitamin B6 leads to hypothyroidism from decreased TRH production in the hypothalamus and that replacing low levels can restore thyroid function.*

Certain states, including an active lifestyle, can increase your demand for vitamin B6.

Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, is widely used by thyroid patients to counteract the negative effects thyroid dysfunction has on hair, skin, and nails.

When used correctly, biotin can help prevent hair loss, restore eyelashes and eyebrows, improve mood, and enhance skin health.

Some thyroid patients falsely believe that biotin should never be taken if they have a thyroid problem because it may interfere with thyroid lab tests, but this isn’t entirely true.

You can take advantage of all of the benefits that biotin provides while avoiding issues with thyroid lab test accuracy if you stop taking Thyroid B complex 2-4 days prior to when you get your labs drawn.

Vitamin B9, also known as folate, is needed by the body to create and repair DNA and to regenerate an important compound called methionine.

Folate deficiency leads to an elevation in homocysteine which reduces methylation in the body and increases the risk of many medical conditions including dementia, heart disease, and stroke.

On top of this, low folate has been shown to affect TSH levels and promote an increase in thyroid antibodies (both anti-TPO and thyroglobulin) making it critical for patients with any thyroid condition.

Thyroid B Complex features folate as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium which is a naturally occurring and pre-activated form of folate.*

Choline is a compound used by the body to provide support and structure to the membrane of cells and is involved in supporting the function of muscle control, brain health, memory, and mood.

Research also suggests that choline levels have a strong correlation with T4 and free T4 levels indicating its importance in thyroid function.*

Research suggests that up to 68% of patients with hypothyroidism are not getting enough vitamin B12.

So it’s no surprise that they end up with symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency like fatigue, hair loss, depression, and brain fog.

Replacing B12 is not as easy as you might think given that many patients suffer from various genetic disorders in B12 metabolism.

Thyroid B Complex solves this problem by including all three active forms of B12 including:

  • Methylcobalamin – Methylcobalamin is a pre-methylated and naturally occurring form of B12 that is used primarily in the cytoplasm where it is used to turn homocysteine into methionine.
  • Adenosylcobalamin – Adenosylcobalamin is a pre-methylated and naturally occurring form of B12 that is stored in the mitochondria where it’s used to create ATP.
  • Hydroxycobalamin – Hydroxycobalamin is an intermediate and natural form of B12 that is incredibly stable and used by the body to eliminate cyanide and is ideal for certain genetic disorders.

Each is dosed at 1 mg (1,000 mcg) to brute force absorption and metabolism even in the face of MTHFR genetic mutations and absorption issues from gastritis or other gut-related problems.

Why Dr. Childs Recommends It

“Sub-optimal levels of B vitamins are incredibly common among thyroid patients and these deficiencies mimic the symptoms of hypothyroidism which complicates thyroid treatment.

On top of this, standard B complex supplements do not contain optimal doses or forms of B vitamins to replace these low levels.

Thyroid B Complex solves this problem by providing supraphysiologic doses that bypass genetic issues in B vitamin metabolism and gut-related problems that impair absorption in thyroid patients.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Take one capsule daily, with or without a meal. If used with thyroid medication, take 30-60 minutes before or after.

Yes.

Thyroid B Complex was formulated to include pre-methylated and pre-activated B vitamins which means it’s usable in those with genetic MTHFR genetic mutations.

Yes!

Thyroid B Complex can be used with all thyroid medications.

For best results, make sure to take it 30-60 minutes away from whenever you take your thyroid medication (either before or after).

Theoretically, yes, but practically, no.

Anything can be harmful if you take enough of it but, when it comes to vitamin B12, it’s highly unlikely that you will ever reach this threshold.

To date, no tolerable upper intake level has been established and I’ve been unable to find even any case reports to suggest that someone has taken too much.

This is because vitamin B12 (and other B vitamins) are considered water soluble.

Water soluble vitamins dissolve in water which means any excess is easily eliminated via the kidneys and through the urine.

So this is not something that you need to worry about as long as you have functioning kidneys.

Thyroid B Complex is very well tolerated and should not cause any negative symptoms.

Aside from the positive benefits you may experience while taking it, taking it may change the color of your urine.

This change in urine color is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

In short, yes.

Because of their importance, you may find B vitamins added to various supplements that are designed to treat other conditions.

Many of my own thyroid support supplements and adrenal support supplements, for example, contain B vitamins.

Some people get concerned in these situations because they feel like they will be taking too much of any given B vitamin but this is rarely an issue.

Because B vitamins are water-soluble (with few exceptions) there is very little risk of taking too much as they are easily eliminated.

And as far as wasting money or taking too much, that is rarely an issue either as many people, especially thyroid patients, benefit from doses that are much higher than the RDA.

So even if you are taking another supplement that contains B vitamins, it’s very unlikely to cause issues and is, instead, likely to provide even more benefit to you.

Yep!

Like all of my supplements, I’ve formulated Thyroid B complex so that it can be taken and combined with my other supplements.

B vitamins are essential for many different processes in the body so how you react when taking them will vary from the next person.

Having said that, the most common benefits seen when taking Thyroid B complex include:

  • More energy and less fatigue
  • Better cognition and less brain fog
  • Better sleep
  • Improved hair growth
  • More focus

A better way to think about how Thyroid B Complex will help you is like this:

Your body has a need for multiple B vitamins that interact with many different processes in your body.

As you put the B vitamins into your body that it needs, every system will run more efficiently.

Definitely not!

There is a lot of confusion among thyroid patients and biotin so let me clear it up for you:

Every single human on Earth needs biotin in order to function optimally and biotin has beneficial impacts on a lot of systems in the body including the function of hair, skin, and nails.

So no matter what, every thyroid patient has a need for biotin.

What is true, and this is where thyroid patients get tripped up, is that biotin has the potential to interfere with the accuracy of thyroid lab tests.

Taking high doses of biotin prior to when you get your thyroid labs drawn may make your thyroid lab tests look better than they actually are.

But don’t get confused.

Biotin does NOT interfere with thyroid function, just the accuracy of your lab results.

And this problem can be completely solved by simply avoiding biotin for 2-4 days before you are scheduled to get your thyroid tested.

This means you can benefit from the use of biotin without it interfering with your lab tests.

Yes, you should.

Thyroid B Complex contains 1,000 mcg of biotin per serving and biotin has been shown to interfere with the accuracy of thyroid lab tests.

For this reason, and to prevent issues with thyroid lab test accuracy, stop taking Thyroid B Complex 2-4 days prior to when you get your labs drawn.

In order for the body to use B vitamins, they need to be in the correct form.

Unfortunately, many of the cheapest forms of various B vitamins come in synthetic and unnatural forms which require activation by the body before they can be used.

Pre-methylated (also referred to as pre-activated) B vitamins come in their natural and activated form which do not require additional activation by the body.

This is important because approximately 40% of the population has genetic mutations that impact the activation and metabolism of B vitamins.

For this reason, these unnatural and synthetic vitamins do not provide the benefits that people really want when they take a B complex.

You might think this is an easily solvable problem because don’t manufacturer wants their supplements to actually work?

You’d think so, but the problem with pre-methylated and pre-activated B vitamins is that they are far more expensive than their synthetic analogs.

As a result, manufacturers will often cut costs and place into their formulas these cheaper versions which means their formulations are inferior to those that contain the activated versions.

It should go without saying, but that’s not what I do.

The formulation of all B vitamins (and folate) are the most bioavailable (and, consequently, expensive) versions of B vitamins available.

This means you don’t need to worry about genetic problems that may negatively impact your ability to use any of the ingredients in this formula.

It’s nothing to worry about.

Some untrained doctors get concerned when their patients take high doses of vitamin B12 because it will cause their serum B12 levels to be marked as high.

If this happens, their doctor will often tell them that they are taking too much B12 and they need to cut back.

There’s one big problem with this approach:

It’s completely inaccurate.

All doctors have been trained (though, most have forgotten), that serum B12 is one of the least accurate ways to measure vitamin B12 status in the body.

This is because most of the use of B12 in the body is found intracellularly (inside of the cells) and when you check for serum B12, you can only see what’s in the blood.

Furthermore, assessing your serum B12 status says nothing about whether or not your body is able to metabolize and use B12.

This is why all doctors are trained to look at other measures of B12 status such as methylmalonic acid which is a metabolite created during the use of B12.

On top of all of this, vitamin B12 is water soluble and there’s virtually no risk of taking too much!

So any doctor who gets concerned over your B12 status being high needs to review their notes from their first year of medical school.

As was alluded to in the previous question, serum B12 is a very inaccurate way to measure the need for B12 by the body.

There are many people who have relatively normal serum B12 levels but who benefit from additional vitamin B12.

A good rule of thumb to use is that if you find that you have many of the symptoms of sub-optimal B vitamins, it’s both safe and effective to trial something like Thyroid B Complex to see if it improves your situation.
